Just a couple of comments from my experience in the building trades. If you don't have the cut-outs it's easier to square off the hole and cut a piece of dry-wall to fit. Also as Tet said when mudding "less is more". The commonest mistake DYIers make in dry-wall taping is to use away too much mud. The less you put on the easier the sanding is too. You pick it up pretty quickly by doing though, 2 or 3 patches and you'll have it figured out I'm sure. Practise on less visible areas like insides of closets. You really need a proper screw-gun or drill adapter for dry-wall screws to do this job too. The screw head should be just below flush , try not to break the paper, that weakens the hold of the screw. It is the kind of repair that any "handyman" should be able to do. Good luck, I'll sure you'll do a good job Kochab.

The jobs Ive done were finishing in closets so it should go pretty easily for me but these tips will defiantly help anyone doing it for their first time.

Cool tut, Tet! Gonna need this. You'll be the man to answer this I reckon. How would I fill a hole on both sides? Where my cupboard is,Im gonna have to cut holes in 2 walls, for in and out venting. The in vent is coming in to the bottom of the cupboard from the frontroom, and the exhaust is goin in to the bathroom from the top, opposite the in vent. Ill put a wall plate/grill over the hole on the in side and prolly the same in the bathroom.
Will I need to bridge the cavity with a length of 5in dia. plastic tube on both sides? And Ill need to seal both holes on both sides eventually when I shut down.
I hope this makes sense. I could get pics if needed. Cheers.

ps Nice work on that grow room, thats here somewhere. Do you have a costruction trade at all?[/b]
Tin pipe, heating and cooling stuff, round, square, rectangular.
If there's no other holes in teh wall I don't bridge it.

I do lath, plaster and drywall, lots of stucco in Cali.

Better than punching someone else in a fit of anger I suppose. Walls can be repaired, sometimes emotions cannot.

How big is the hole? I got some spare pieces left over of a wall I took down not too long ago for just such an occasion. Ive learned the hard way to keep spare pieces around in case of mishaps.
Then I dont have to figure out an answer when I say "hey pop care to fix this for me" and he yells back "with what?" I know I got that spare for him to use
