View Full Version : Vintage Haze germ rates?

Has anyone had any problems getting these beans to pop? I germed 6 about a week ago, thinking that the chances for females would be better than just germing 2 or 3.
So.... 4 of them woke up. 2 never did. Undaunted, I germed 3 more. Only 1 cracked this time. It died this morning.
My germination method (obviously flawed somehow):
- Soaked the seeds 24 hrs in half a cup of distilled water with 1 drop Thrive Alive B1
- Transferred seeds about a 1/4" down into rapid rooter plugs with a covered tray and heating mat (set on low)
- Covered the seed holes with fresh soil. Just a wee bit. Enough to cover the seed
- Prepared a 1qt spray bottle with distilled water and 1/4 tsp Liquid Karma.
- Misted the plugs until damp but not drenched
- Those that broke the surface were put under 2x 26w CFLs until true leaves showed....and now under MH.
So out of 9 seeds attempted, only 5 have germed (1 died) leaving me with 4 that are doing ok. Those 4 were transplanted yesterday.
I have 1 single Vintage Haze seed left to be germinated. My original plan for six plants is no longer feasible.
I will make one more attempt with the last seed I have but I'm pretty disappointed with the ratio I've had.

I think that the superthrive(thrive alive or whatever it was) may have had something to do with it....
Im not sure what liquid karma is...Sounds like a nutrient?

I germinated 2 seeds and had both of them crack within 72 hours.

sorry to hear of your misfortune with the seeds TZ... i seriously doubt that it is the superthrive. Most likely those seeds either wanted to germ too late, or are not viable.
I can send you some extra with your next order if you like... or if you'd rather not order again, i'll send you some anyway.

From Botanicare: Liquid Karma functions as a growth engine because its high metabolic activity produces a large amount of energy which is immediately transformed to growth. Starting with seed germination and following through to vegetative growth, budding and flowering, the continued use of Liquid Karma ensures optimal plant growth at every stage.
Anyway, maybe you're right Kochab. I'll probably leave the supplementing alone until I have established growth.

either way whatever it is I can make it up for you. odds are that it was likely just a bad few beans like skunk mentioned.
And skunk it isnt really right for the Skunk house to make that up to him...He recived them from me out of some that I had extra in my own stock.
I have some that just got done a little bit ago and should be dry now. I backcrossed them once again using a reversed male of the strain that was used to make the vintage haze so female rates should be much higher if he would like them:D

I had a 10 for 10 germination rate......
I just take a paper towel wet it put the seeds inside then put the paper towel into a baggie. thats it nothing else to do
they will pop real fast.................I dont do the soak thing or use any nutes or additives...
jMy Vh seeds were fast peopers....24-48 hrs on all 10..................
This what they look like now that they are a few weeks old.....

This is the tap root...very healthy seeds.............

we've tested over a hundred of them when they first went on sale this year, 100% germination. it's possible that the soak might have impaired (we use paper towels), or the seeds could have been stored improperly, or shipping could have gotten them past destructive temperatures (if you got them this summer).
i'm sorry to hear you've had bad luck with them http://www.skunkskool.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif

germination is an easy task......there is no reason to make it harder than it is........try the paper towel method on your next batch...if you would like a few BM seeds for free.Pm me and i will send them to you.

Ok, my last bean went in the paper towel tonite when I got home from work. Crossing my fingers.
And I apologize if I sounded whiney in my initial post. The truth is... I've never had seeds with good genetics and, knowing a little about the lineage of VH, I was a wee bit concerned about what was happening. But I'm more disappointed in my own abilities sometimes than I am with this germ rate.

Thank you bro. And please know it wasn't my intention to get replacements or anything. But since you put it this way, then I'm down for it. But the question becomes...are you prepared to see my results? LOL oh shit I probably just jinxed myself.

The whole reason for www.theskunkhouse.com is to get good genetics to growers worldwide.............and the best part..................they are priced very well under market value. they just think everyone should be able to grow good pot without being taxed on the beans.
I paid almost 300 for 10 seeds in the past.WTF is up with that??????

200-300 price ranges are generally set on what they want to charge per plant. ie, a breeder with a strain may know he/she has 75% female from a batch of seeds, and could then say that 9 of 12 seeds would be money plants. if the plants yield an oz or more, then you're talking 22.50 per plant at 300$ for 12 seeds. 22.50 isn't bad for a quarter ounce of medical grade pot, let alone what the plants could be worth (medically speaking) for a long term, if one chose to keep a mother.
our prices are set low so the average joe has the opportunity to attain great genetics. i know i can't afford 300$ for every ten seeds i use.... http://www.skunkskool.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif

also time working with the strain is accounted for into pricing lots of the time.
I just couldent see $300 for 10 seeds of an AUTO strain which could be done in about a year and a half...Especially When a mother plant of the strain cannot be kept.

Well the most expensive seeds I've bought were the Chronic ( around $300.00) but, in fairness to Serious Seeds, they were 15 not 10, and I got 22 in my pack, 16 females. I'm still growing it 2 years later. So,as a one time purchase I could justify it. For auto-flowering strains where you can't make a mother for cloning though it seems excessive. I've been recommending Skunkhouse to people I know looking for seeds, they sometimes seem dubious that good genetics can be so inexpensive, and would actually prefer to pay more. People are funny sometimes.

This is an excellent point... and it is an ethic i use in real life. i don't buy fakes and only buy brand name foods etc. as i believe that we need to pay for quality.
however over the years of growing expensive genetics i have learned that you can pay through the nose and grow a load of shit, and you can buy cheap nirvana seeds and grow perfection.

id say you got a good deal on them then. 16 females when you bought a 15 pack...? Cant beat that for results:D
as far as people buying cheaper seeds, they are afraid of buying something from people that they think may offer sketchy quality.
Once word gets out about us and some reviews get around saying that were a good company then people wont be so apt to scoff @ them. Itll happen all in due time. http://www.skunkskool.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif

I agree with purchasing the brand name stuff most of the time because it is often more widely distributed than the small name guys and it is easier to find consistency. I havent used the skunk seed bank personally only nirvana wich I will not order from again, but I will come up with some cash and patience soon for some skunkhouse seeds. The skunk bank is the only seed bank that I would reccomend right now because I have not heard any legitimate complaints about it since it has started. I think I remember going onto the site when it sold two differnt kinds of seeds and now it is up to eight I believe.

yes, and we'll be expanding further in the new year and should rise quickly up to 15 strains by march... tbh i expect there to be 20 around that time. where we'll probably drop certain strains to bring in new and fresh flavours.
the ball is rolling, and will gather momentum. it doesn't help my laziness in getting theskunkhouse into a workable site again.
