Hi folks,

This will be a thread for ppl to post up some of their favorite pictures TAKEN BY THEMSELVES. It doesn't have o be a Pulitzer, just a favorite of yours. It can be about ANYTHING ... no bud porn ... there is already a very nice thread for that ...

The only rule being nothing bigger than 800X600 ... k? If you don't have software to do that for you, I suggest downloading IRFANVIEW ... which is a dynamite program and 100% free.

Okay, so let's get started.

I will post one of my fav's and post one I just happened to snap early this morning!

Here is this mornings pic....

King's Knight... followed by the queen's pawn.

Very strong white opening, probably the strongest if attempting to play a pawn storm. It's actually my favourite opening and will beat most people below a certain rating.

Looks like we are on the right side of the coin this year
We sure did short end of the stick last year
Our winter was not real bad had a couple little periods of snow and cold ,still got about10-12 feet of snow but we got it all in storms and squalls and it melted in between a couple times..
We had more hot and sunny days in the first week of apil than all lastt summer
we wore shorts and t shirts instead of winter coats and rain boots at Easter it was 90*

Little cooler than they said it was to be here today its only like low 70s was to be mid 80s
Is to about 90* tomorrow with humidity...

If it could be like today for rest of summer it would be great low mid 70s and bright sunshine

That really does suck though tet

Here's another top predator...this guy has been here for years and we get along famously...he is quite tame by nature...as long as you aren't on his hit list....they both fell out of a tree right behind where I was sitting, reading a paper. Made quite a thump. I thought a branch simply fell, which happens all the time... yah, a muscle branch.

That's a wolf spider I think.... they are pretty cool, and will keep all kinds of critters down in your house. Years ago we had a wood spider who lived in our bathroom....they eat just about everything, but simply love roaches....we don't believe in killing things at our place, and that spider was familiar to us and vice versa. He/she was so big...we could hear it running around on the floors at night...chasing something down.

Get rid of spiders...you'll have roaches and such. Get rid of snakes, and you'll have mice and rats....

I choose the spiders and snakes... LoL.

DW's is an Orb Weaver.... and yours is a Wolf spider...there are many variations....but the give away is a very large set of multiple eyes. They are quite something and one of the few spiders that has a built in GPS system...meaning they can see prey and then work their way around them out of sight and not lose track of where the prey is.

I brought some back from North Carolina once in my 350....man they were heavy stones....then I had the bright idea of making smaller ones out of them for my snakes.... got out my sledge hammer...and kablam!...nothing happened....tiny bits flew off and hit me like shrapnel.... I immediately thought of the olden days where they had prisoners slag at that stuff.... I grasped the discipline immediately.

Pretty sweet huh? I forgot about all of these lilies 5 years ago when I had a fire move through part of my property, and they were left in a zone where I turned off the irrigation. Grass grew over the pots and I never saw them again....then in late February, I was out there cleaning the area up because I noticed a particularly nasty weed was taking over. As I cleaned up...BEHOLD...these bulbs were just hanging in there...no shoots. I split them and repotted....and voila...4 months later!

Never give up!

Well, I couldn't sleep tonight.... and we had a good rain storm finish up about 2 hours ago...so I went out and shot another lily with a flash.... I didn't frame it perfectly, but it was pretty dark, and I was running out of battery.... I'll try and get another tomorrow nite... Enjoy!!

And yes Kant.... I think these are at least as beautiful as Roses, and the stalk with it's whorled leaves is a cut above them. All in all....what's probably stops it is the short life of the flower...only a few days...but it puts out about 9 -12 flowers per plant...so it "shows" for weeks.

i purchased an arrangement that had tiger lily's in the mix, it had a rank yet subtle odor i believe it attracts flies and other insects to help pollinate,,,or it could have been the florist spraying something to preserve the flowers

here Rob.... this is what I just read....

The Tiger Lily has a strong, sweet and distinctively lily smell. Besides producing a stunning spectacle, most parts of this plant are edible. There are two varieties of the Tiger Lily:

* The Oriental Variety: Propagates through bulbs that form at leaf axils.
* The Common Wildflower Variety: Propagates by tuberous roots.

The Tiger Lily is known by a host of different names in different parts of the world. Some of the synonyms are: Lilium tigrinum, Devil Lily, Kentan, Lilium lancifolium, Leopard Lily, Pine Lily, Lilium catesbaei, Columbia lily, Oregon Lily, Western Wood Lily, Chalice-Cup Lily, Western Red Lily, etc.
Facts About The Tiger Lily

* Tiger Lily was first described by the famous Swedish botanist Carl von Linne (Linnaeus) in 1753.
* The Tiger Lily has significant medicinal use. A tincture is made from the fresh plant and has proved of great value in uterine-neuralgia, congestion and irritation, also in the nausea and vomiting of pregnancy.
* Tiger Lily flower essence helps in suppressing aggressive tendencies in individuals and helps in holistic healing.
* Tiger Lily can often act as a carrier of viral diseases and so becomes a vector infecting other species. It is therefore better to grow this species well away from your other lilies
* Tiger Lily has some toxic effects on cats. It can produce vomiting, in appetence, lethargy, kidney failure, and even death.
* Tiger Lily has edible flower buds apart from edible roots and shoots. These can often have a bitter flavor. When baked, lily bulbs taste rather like potatoes.
* The best place to find dried Tiger Lily buds is in an Asian market. Look for soft buds, and store well in a cool, dry place. Tiger Lily buds must be soaked in warm water for about 30 minutes to soften them before adding them to dishes. The tough stem attached to them should be removed. Besides adding to Chinese dishes, they can enhance the flavor of egg dishes and salads.
* There is an old legend from Asia about the Tiger Lily. A Korean hermit helped a wounded tiger by removing an arrow from its body. The tiger asked the hermit to use his powers to perpetuate their friendship after his death. The hermit agreed and when the tiger died, his body became a tiger lily. Eventually the hermit drowned and his body was washed away. The Tiger Lily spread everywhere searching for its friend.
* There is a superstition that smelling Tiger Lily will give you freckles.
* The Tiger Lily stands for wealth and prosperity.
* The Tiger Lily, have six stamens (composed of anthers and filaments), one pistil (composed of the stigma, style and ovary), a long style, and a three-lobed stigma.

Gp with the Asiatics.... they have no smell at all.

I thought about it too when I was there. I thought, how cool it would be to go scuba diving every weekend. I could actually make use of my diving license other than this 1 week every other year thing.

although we'd have to rename it, unless you're a fan of nostalgia :splif:

Btw in st. croix, rum was cheaper than water...for the most part. a fifth of Cruzan rum (which is made on the island) was $6. the imported stuff was still cheaper than in the states. While I'm not a big drinker I'll say that rum + sun = awesomeness. Although a joint probably would have been better. oh well. rum did just fine.

I'm not having nearly the yield I had last year though. I moved my summer garden plot into what should be my fall plot, and I hardly amended the soil. I'm getting about 6 Peppers per plant and 4-5 tomatoes etc.... but that is all on my fertilizer.... it's good but it can't replace good soil. It's like trying to grow vegetables on the beach....it's just sand. Plus way too much sun for the summer. I just didn't want to deal with the area I need to move it too. Short cuts usually pay off with short results.

Next year....

A few years ago I had a Black Widow living in one of my irrigation valve housings ... which I needed to access daily. The housing isn't very large and is in the ground ... the opening being about 6". I was amazed that only after a very short training period, all I had to do was knock on the lid, wait 5 seconds and remove the cover. she would purposely move away from the valve handle I needed to turn. She and I made physical contact several times over that season, but she never once showed any aggression. I even got my Mom to turn that valve when I went away for two weeks!

Gotta build the trust.

Yeah I had a friend that lost half his thigh to one bite. Told him as soon as I saw the black ring around the bite that he had been bitten by a recluse and better get to the emergency room but he shook it off for about 3 days. Can you believe that, 3 days to let that poison eat away at your leg? He has to walk with a cane now and he is only 35...

i was first refused and then given awful medical advice when I went for treatment. i went home and drew out the poison with clay and herbs and very hot and concentrated ES baths. I kept circulation in my foot by alternating the hot ES bath and very cold ice water along with frequent vigorous scrubbings with a stiff brush. i have no holes in my foot, but was left with swollen tender rheumatoid arthritis lumps in the bottom of both my feet. It was wierd. I got reaction in both feet! That bite had tingling and numbing going up one side of my body and down the next. We got those spiders around here and everytime i hear of someone getting bit, they end up with a big hole in themselves or loose a limb, while in the hospital in the care of medical experts!?
